An uneasy truce develops between Drake and Reid, until the Inspector seems to forget the incident and subject them to his usual moods.

So when Drake is called to the Inspector's office, he has no idea what to expect.

"The incident with the jail cells," Reid begins.

"Sir." Drake's voice holds a warning note. He had hoped it had gone away for good.

"It seems you conduct did not go unnoticed."

Drake's jaw tenses. "Inspector, I can-"

"You're being given a commendation. For exemplary conduct. I suggest you find your uniform, Sergeant. There will be a fête outside the station this evening. I expect a couple of Parliamentary members at the very least."

In a daze, Drake exits the office and almost walks straight past his lover in his shock.

Bennet finally breaks away from the celebrations and finds Matthew among the crowd.

"S'fine gin they have here," he slurs, swaying forward so that his nose bumps against his lover's ear.

Matthew takes hold of Bennet by the hip, tight enough for it be pointed, whilst at the same time looking as though he is just keeping his friend upright to a casual onlooker.

"D'you think it's time we hailed a cab?"

Bennet's lips brush Matthew's ear as he grins.

"Afore I have you up against this wall?"

"Or I have you..." Matthew leaves the statement hanging between them, as he gives Bennet's hip a firm squeeze and pulls away.

Something stirs in Bennet at the thought, a lot like panic but mixed strongly with lust.

He's momentarily dumbstruck, gives in to the desire to kiss his lover's ear, take a nip at it.

"Home time, Sergeant Drake," Jackson suggests, as lips and teeth play at his ear. He's not so drunk to forget the beating he'd received for daring to love another man.

"C'mon."

Drake takes Matthew's wrist and slips out of the pub with all the subtly of a carthorse.

He flags down a cab, still keeping a proprietary grip on his lover's arm.

"'m right here," Matthew laughs, trying to make it look a little more as though he's supporting his drunken friend, rather than the borderline groping that is actually occurring.

"Don't worry, I'm not gonna go anywhere."

"Nope. Taking you home. Mrs Ramsay has her ear wax an' everything."

Drake tries to grope him and misses, hand snatching at his lover's jacket.

"You're drunk, Sergeant," Matthew rolls his eyes and takes Bennet's hands firmly in his.

"Hands here, where I can see 'em," he tries out his best impression of his Sergeant arresting some ne'er-do-well.

Drake stumbles into the cab, still grinning.

"You gonna clap me in irons?" he asks, half-teasing, half-wanting.

"I might do," Matthew grins, keeping his hands firm on Bennet's wrists and clambering on top of him in the back of the cab, away from prying eyes for a few minutes.

"Seems right, for such a public display of indecency."

Bennet tries to tug his hands away from Matthew, though not trying all that hard, wanting to touch and be touched.

"Like indecent," he says, craning his neck to kiss his doctor.

"You're drunk," Matthew points out, though he likewise barely puts up a fight against Bennet's kisses.

"Or else you'd be far more of a prude."

"M'not a prude," Bennet says indignantly, moving his restrained hands just enough to rub his fingers over Matthew's crotch.

"Not tonight, clearly," Matthew laughs, wondering idly what Mrs Ramsay would have to say if he spoilt his new dress trousers by coming inside of them. He imagines she'd be rather angry.

"Leave that," he tries his best to sound severe, in charge of the situation. "Almost home, now. I want you safe behind closed doors."

Bennet, like a naughty schoolboy pushing his schoolmaster to the limits, reaches out to touch a second time.

And then grins, clearly not fearing any reprisal.

Matthew is far more accustomed to being the one splayed out on the seat, wrists bound and pushing the limits. But he knows the game, even if from the other point of view, and knows he must do something to reprimand Drake for his misbehaviour.

Tightening his grip on both wrists, he delivers a hard, bruising kiss to his lover's lips, making his dominance known.

Drake grins and kisses him back.

"S'nice," he says.

"'s not meant to be nice..." Matthew grumbles, pulling away as the carriage slows to a halt.

"C'mon, inside with you."

Drake gives some money to the driver, and stumbles up to their front door.

Mrs Ramsay does not open it tonight, and he imagines she has made herself scarce. He grins.

"House to ourselves."

"Straight upstairs," Matthew does his best to sound commanding as he fumbles with his own set of keys, letting them in through the front door.

"Straight to bed."

"Is that an order, Captain?" Drake teases, leaning drunkenly against the doorframe and admiring his doctor's arse.

"It is, Sergeant," Matthew nods, straightening his back, trying to play up to the role he has given himself.

"Quick march."

[thegentlemanthug]

His body jerks upright before his brain's thought it through, his legs already rushing to obey the command.

"Sir," he says, a twitch of a smile as he warms to the game.
